Coastal Carolina Artist: Stanton D. Allaben

Born in Connecticut, went to college at the University of New Hampshire, and lived in Vermont for 20 years before moving to South Carolina I am an artist who discovered his calling to art at a late age. My mother was an artist and I am distantly related to George Catlin, the famous American Indian artist, so I guess paint runs in my veins.

I educated myself in the field of art by reading countless art books and magazines and drew and paintied for hours on end day after day. The impressionists have always been my favorite although I don't restrict my interest to only one style of painting. I continue my education by visiting galleries that represent some of America's top artists and study their work closely.

My style is a combination of impressionism and realism with an emphasis on showing bold and numerous brush strokes in my oils. You will see this more in my figurative work than my landscapes. Moving back and forth from oil to watercolor is always interesting as the two mediums are totally different. I am now working with figurative subject matter in addition to my landscapes. I believe that an artist will stagnate if he/she does not constantly explore new things.

I was recently invited to show my work at a prestigious show in Florence, Italy that takes place every two years. However, the costs were too much, so I passed on the opportunity. I had my first one man show in the summer of 2007 and did quite well. Watercolors and oils sold equally.

I am a member of the Art League of Hilton Head, and the Society of Bluffton Artists and show my work at several commercial galleries in South Carolina and New York. I am looking for additional galleries to represent my work, so if you like what you see and know any gallery owners, by all means, expose them to my web site.
